"If a woman's body wasn't powerful, it would not be so controversial"
~the Laughing Sage
Alisa's Note:
So ladies, we have come full circle. Let me tell you - it has been one HELL of a circle! It has stretched through milennia - from the historical periods where menstrual blood was involved in many rituals and consumed for its healing properties to the current historical period where women's bodies have been fought over for control of reproduction and sexual freedoms - to young teenage girls being put on period cessation birth control pills like Lybrel to now finally this landmark study you'll read about below on the life saving potential of menstrual blood.
How appropriate then that this study's findings coincided with our launch of the new LSW newsletter format. Then again, that's spring energy for you - a time of rediscovery, rebirth, and renewal. I just LOVE the spring!
So what has me and all of us at LSW so a twitter? Science, ladies, has FINALLY caught up with what we have known for millenia, and yet forgotten since the time BCE - that menstrual blood is powerful and healing and not simply biological waste produced monthly due to missed conception. No no - in fact, they have seen in a little petri dish - that menstrual blood cells applied to heart cells from DEAD rats, caused the heart cells not only to start BEATING again, but also for entirely new sheets of heart tissue to grow! If that doesn't turn you on to the power of your unique biology, then nothing will.
I on the other hand was moved to tears when I read about what western medicine is now excited about in terms of what menstrual blood can do to repair damaged heart tissue, among other applications it envisions. Not because of the "duh" moment here, but because maybe, just maybe in my lifetime, we will see a complete reversal of the cultural stigma associated with this powerful monthly experience.
In our lifetimes, we may see the end of ad campaigns calling our periods "the curse" or referring to it as something that stops you from being a woman or having fun and creating success.
Maybe, just maybe, when we start to value our blood again, little girls will look forward once more to receiving their initiation into womanhood and not jump on Seasonale or Lybrel to skip their periods all year long.
Perhaps menstrual blood will become so valuable to the western medical community that they will finally edit the language given to it in biology texts.
While i'm dreaming big here, perhaps we will even see wings of hospitals dedicated to the care and pampering of menstruating women who go there monthly to donate their precious menstrual blood so that many many more lives can be saved by the various applications of it's stem cell precursors.
One thing I do know, is how marvelous it is to see that wheel of "history repeating" itself turn in our direction. We have seen this pattern everywhere - some piece of "wisdom" gets destroyed first by "Science" who claims if it can't be proven it must not be true. Then "Science" seeks to acquire "knowledge" by researching "information" on a given subject, and then when it collects significant "information", "Science" claims to have found "knowledge" and proves often what it had originally destroyed. Fascinating process, isn't it.
You, however, knew this somewhere deep inside, that your body and biology were incredible, didn't you?
My wish is that this is the beginning, a reclamation, but more importantly a redefinition period, where we all fall in love with ourselves all over again on every level - the blood, the moods, the curves, the creativity, the transformative power - all of it. First of course, you all need to make peace with your bodies - get those hormones balanced, get off the synthetic hormones and the mood altering meds, unshackle yourselves - we're here to help you do that if you need us. From this foundation, the more fun party begins. We're throwing the ultimate party for your health and inner genius, and we want you to be there with us!!
For those of you who have been loyal readers and LSW supporters for the past 6 years, we thank you for helping to spread the word as you know we've been working on evolving this conversation this whole time - for those of you new to our newsletter - welcome - we hope you stick around and enjoy the ride - it's about to get REALLY interesting;)
wishing you all gorgeous healthy periods
in light,
alisa

Thanks Alisa. I love your wish that we and our menstrual blood will become appreciated and valued again. I am moving toward no longer having my menstrual cycle and am valuing it more now.
