Unplugged

In a client session yesterday, this image came to me of a woman with a number of electrical cords plugged into her belly. My client “Maria” was in a state of stress and feeling weighted down from her job, her clients, and all the other responsibilities pulling her in different directions. It was as if each one of these had a different plug in her and they were sucking out the life energy so that she had nothing left for herself. And she didn’t.

In times like that, there is no time for self-care or self-expression. We’re lucky if we can shove something in our mouths before running out the door in the morning. We miss out on appointments or events that really mean something to us, and instead we spend our time doing doing doing for other people. Our bodies scream out for help via mood swings, skin breakouts, cramps, cravings, or anxiety. We get stuck in a self-perpetuating cycle and it can feel hard to get out.

My recommendation to Maria was to start by writing down a list of all the different “plugs” that were tapped into her and then later do a visualization to unplug each one.

Then she could take a look at the different situations or relationships that were weighing her down the most, and assess where boundaries need to be put into place or where communication needs to happen.

But all that is not enough. To truly unplug, you must do something physical. Depending on your situation and your body, different methods might be appropriate, but here are some of my favorite practices for unplugging and releasing:

- Massage or other bodywork. I’ve been a big fan and regular client of Vital-Ki Energy, a Korean modality of bodywork, and I go to a magic-maker named Master Jey Park down on 14th St. She is intuitive and powerful and gets things moving!

- Kundalini yoga. I just took an AMAZING class at Hari NYC with the lovely Sarah Bernier and literally felt the negative energy and stuckness being squeezed out of me. If you’ve never experienced Kundalini before, I highly recommend it – completely different than all other forms of yoga, complete with basic yet challenging repetitive movements, singing, and meditating.

- Dancing. Take an African dance class, go to Intensati or 5Rhythms or Journey Dance, or simply blast the music in the comfort of your own home and go crazy.

When you clear out all the stuckness and other people’s “stuff” that’s lurking around in your own energy field, you become a free channel for receiving and expressing what YOU want. Not only does it feel great, but it serves the world in a much more powerful way.

So go do it!

What ways are you getting unplugged this week?
